It will be a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that Lamborghini R&D boss Maurizio Reggiani says will be the most powerful in its class, which means we can expect more than 600 horsepower to make sure it outclasses the Bentley Bentayga. A top speed of more than 187 mph has also been promised by Lamborghini.

The brand chose the 4.0-liter V8 over its V10 and V12 engines because it will deliver more low-end torque along with better fuel efficiency. The SUV will only be offered in four-wheel drive, while a plug-in hybrid drivetrain will likely join the lineup sometime after launch.

“It will be a true Lamborghini because it will be the fastest among the SUVs. We will have the most powerful engine and will have the car that is going to be a real super sports SUV,” said Lamborghini boss Stephan Winkelmann. “It has to keep the balance between matching the DNA of the brand, that is being a car that is really driveable and also have a lot of off-road capability, but the driving on the roads is much more important,” he said.

For its design, Winkelmann says that the Urus has been slightly revised compared to the concept we saw last year, with the changes allowing for more comfort. “Inside, it will have a look and feel that is a bit different from where we have been before. The surfaces are larger and the needs of occupants more around usability. The Urus must be capable of being a family’s first car all year round. It must have driveability, comfort, roominess and more,” said Winkelmann.

Special edition models including a high performance Super Veloce and a more luxury focused version of the Urus are also expected to become available.

Pricing is expected to be on par with Aventador, which means the SUV will start around $404,000.

The production-intent Urus is expected to be revealed in late 2017 or early 2018 at either the Frankfurt or Geneva motor show
